How Grit Impacts Learning in the Classroom

Recently Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) has been receiving increased attention because several states have adopted it as an accountability metric under Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). However, SEL has been part of educational research for much longer.

At the University of Pennsylvania, Angela Lee Duckworth studies competencies such as self-control and grit to determine how they might predict both academic and professional success. As you will hear in her TED Talk, she identified through teaching 7th graders that IQ was not the only factor that determined if a student would be successful. Through this, she created her theory around grit (if you’d like to dive deeper she recently published a book on the topic).

Take 6 minutes and watch her TED Talk on Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance.
